I think that the first date depends on the person, but two solid plans for a first date would be to either go for drinks at a nice bar or restaurant or go to a cafe and get a coffee then walk around outside and talk to get to know each other.
If we go for drinks, which I'll admit is always my favourite first date, I feel like we can relax and just get to know each other while having fun getting a little tipsy. Takes the edge of nervousness off the table once you have a drink in you, then the conversation can flow.
BUT, if my match doesn't drink, that's not a dealbreaker for me. We could instead hit a cafe and get coffee or tea or whatever they prefer. Go out and walk around while getting to know each other, the walking helps to ease the nervousness the same way a drink would for me.
Ideally, we would have a great conversation over a delicious cup of coffee or over a glass of champagne. No date is a loss, as the least we can do is learn from one another and laugh at a joke or two. :)
